Herbal Teas that help me when life is hard

This year, I’m learning more than ever how important it is to take care of ourselves. Whatever makes you feel relaxed after a long day at work and smashing the patriarchy, you need to do more of. Except maybe drugs and drinking.

So do herbal drugs! Yay! Here are some herbs that help me unwind, clear my mind and let go of the dumb shit people said to me that day.

1. Chamomile and St. John’s Wort

My favourite herb in the whole world is Chamomile. This is a herb that’s helped me get through fun stuff like insomnia, anxiety issues and coffee jitters. It’s a soothing, mind clearing herb that’s great for the end of the day or before bedtime.

Sometimes I mix this herb with St Johns Wort (important side note: you cannot take St Johns Wort if you’re on antidepressants. Talk to your doctor first.) St Johns Wort is known to help with mood disorders like depression, and I find it makes me feel calm and sleepy, so mixing it with chamomile makes for a good rest after a long day.

2. Raspberry Leaf and Peppermint

Aren’t these two wonderful? I love mixing these two herbs to make a fruity and tasteful blend for the morning or during the day. They’re both good for tummy aches and period cramps, and peppermint itself has a soothing smell that makes me happy every time I smell it.

3. Valerian Root and Lemongrass

Valerian Root is a great herbal remedy for anxiety. I find it makes me feel calm without feeling sleepy which is important. Mixing it with Lemongrass adds a pop of flavour to the otherwise grass tasting herb. Lemongrass is great for digestion, cramps, cleansing and reducing anxiety in the body.

These are my favourite blends for helping me deal with life when life is hard. Mental health is so important to take care of, and if tea is not your thing, see what you can find that helps make you feel calm in a world full of anxiety. Maybe its expensive candles. Maybe it’s turning off your phone for hours. There’s always ways out of the darkness and it’s not just one way – it’s a collection of ways, put together by effort and care for the most important person in your life – you.
